Oxygenated vs. Reformulated

Oxygenated gasoline is a seasonal blend that is used during wintertime in areas that have a high level of carbon monoxide (CO) pollution. The "oxy-fuels" have additives like alcohol (or its derivatives) that increase the oxygen content of the gasoline. The more oxygen that is present during combustion, the lower the level of CO emissions produced. CO emissions result whenever fuel is not fully burned in the combustion process. Thus, the oxygenated gasolines produce less CO than normal gasolines. The decision to use oxygenated gasoline is made for you by the gasoline companies.

Reformulated gasoline also has higher oxygen content than conventional gasoline, but it also is less volatile. Reformulated gasoline is used in areas where ozone and smog levels are high.
